Moles, Holmwood, Barnes & Wager Win Clay Cup 2021

7/17/21

Everson, WA – With a capacity crowd on hand, three drivers won their first Clay Cup Nationals and another found victory lane for the first time in 13 years. Action was sponsored all weekend by the IBEW and NECA, and when the dust finally settled, Mitchell Moles, Derek Holmwood, Jett Barnes and Braeden Wager brought home Clay Cup wins.

Dominic Gorden held the top spot in the 600 Open main from the drop of the green, with Jared Peterson hot on his heels and Mitchell Moles weaving his way up the field to move into the top three early. The race never quite got into lapped traffic, and the yellow flag flew roughly every seven laps throughout the duration of the feature. Moles got past Peterson around lap 20 and tookto work putting pressure on Gorden. Gorden stayed committed to the high groove and would keep Moles off by a narrow margin until disaster struck late in the race. A caution flag flew for a spinning car at the completion of lap 33, and during the caution laps, Gorden pulled to a stop in the infield with an unspecified mechanical failure, giving Moles the lead. Moles would go forward and lead the final seven lap to pick up the $10,000 top prize, with Peterson taking second and Cody Christensen taking third. Ryan Holz won over $1400 in taking the John Heerspink Hard Charger award.

Brock Lemley and Derek Holmwood led the field to green in the 1200 class, with Lemley taking the lead early. Holmwood kept with Lemley as the pair quickly entered slower traffic. A misstep by Brock saw him stop in turn four, handing the lead to Holmwood as he brought the field to a lap eight restart. Holmwood would roll over the final 32 laps of the main, unchallenged as he glided to the line for his second Clay Cup win, the first coming 13 years ago in 2008. Steven Hendrickson and Chance Crum rounded out the podium, with Shane Sexton earning hard charger.

Jett Barnes led every lap of the 600 Restricted main event to score his first Clay Cup win. Austin Wood challenged Barnes late, but Barnes was up to the task each time, driving hard off the high groove to secure the win. Wood had multiple shots at Barnes late thanks to a couple of caution flags but had to settle for second. Mallory Fisher completed a monster weekend with a third place finish in the A Main. Andrew Smith was the John Heerspink Hard Charger.

In the Junior Sprints, Brooklyn Constance and Hayden Stepps led the field to the initial green but contact between the two resulted in both coming to a stop on the track, sending the pair to the rear. Briggs Davis took full advantage and jumped out to the early lead, but it was not long until Braeden Wager moved into the top spot, making what ended up being the race winning pass on lap six. Wager led the rest of the way, surviving two green-white-checkered restarts, holding off Avery Askvig who ended up second and Constance who had raced her way back up to third. The John Heerspink Hard Charger was Dustin Ramsey.
