Lemley Dominates on Opening Night

Everson, WA – A familiar story played out at the 2023 Season Opener for Deming Speedway, with Brock Lemley dominating the field in the Shots 2 Go Espresso 1200 class main event. Four other classes ran on the first night of the year, with Levi Hillier, Jake Munn, Zoey Tupper and Drake Wiersma taking home the opening night wins. 

Lemley’s march through the field in the 1200 division was swift and merciless, as he dispatched slower traffic left and right in his 25 lap wire to wire win. Brock lapped all the way through ninth place in taking the win. Far behind him, the battle for second ended up with Jacob Buckenmeyer taking the runner up spot and Tyson Lemley racing to third. Derek Holmwood earned hard charger, while heat winners were Brock and Alex Lewis. 

Similar to Lemley, Levi Hillier was untouchable in the Speedmart 600 Open class. Hillier led all twenty five laps without challenge, with Carson Guffie taking a career best second place finish home and Macie Logsdon scoring third. Guffie was also hard charger, while the heat winners were Corbin Ramsey and Dakota Drake. 

Jake Munn and Jeff Westergard ran in tight quarters for twenty five laps to decide the win for teh NW Focus Midgets. Westergard led lap one, but a strong move to the inside of turn one on lap two gave Munn the advantage. Westergard would tail Munn, searching all over the track for a place to pass but it was Jake making all the right moves and taking the first win of the season, with Westergard and Sawyer Lind finishing second and third respectively. Westergard won the lone heat race. 

Zoey Tupper overcame adversity for her second career win in the Mytrafficman.NET 600 Restricted class. After tipping over in her heat race, she wrestled her car to a solid heat race finish that gave her a good starting spot for the A Main. While Colton Knapp took off and led the first six laps of the main, Tupper worked her way forward to second and into position to challenge Colton. A hiccup for Knapp approaching lapped traffic gave Zoey the lead, although Colton would unofficially take it back just one lap later. Knapp’s retaking the lead was “unofficial” because before the field could complete lap eight, a yellow flag came out, reverting the lineup back to lap seven were Tupper had control at the front of the field. From there, it was Tupper leading the rest of the way ahead of Colton for the win, with Knapp getting a career best second in the class and Sawyer Baxter running third. Hard charger honors belonged to Fairah Lee, while heat wins went to Avery Touchette, Sawyer Baxter, Knapp and Dustin Ramsey. 

Drake Wiersma caped a successful Deming Speedway debut with a wire to wire win in the Capstone Plastering JR Sprints. Wiersma led all twenty laps but was dogged by Madi Hoppe and Kole Campbell all race long, who ended up placing second and third respectively. Campbell was a heat race winner, as was Savanna Hillier. Hudson Little was the hard charger.
