Gorden, Lemley, Huppert & Constance Win at Clay Cup Prelim Night 2

7/16/21

Everson, WA – Night two of the 2021 IBEW / NECA Clay Cup Nationals is in the books with four more winners picking up preliminary night victories. Dominic Gordon got the win in 600 division, while Brock Lemley took the 1200 win. Jayden Huppert won the 600 Restricted main and Brooklyn Constance pulled off a clean sweep in the Junior Sprints.

The main event of the evening saw young Dominic Gorden take his first Deming Speedway win. Starting second, Gorden passed Ryley Mayer on lap three for the lead, then kept Mayer at bay over the final few laps to take the victory. Mayer and Dominic Carter finished second and third.

In the 1200 class, the lead changed hands four times before the end of the 25 lap main event. Haylee Bloodgood led the first six laps before Scott Kinney drove around the outside and into the lead on lap seven. Kinney led laps seven through sixteen before Dustin O’Brien drove by on lap seventeen and looked to drive away from the field. A lap 21 caution bunched the field and on the restart, Brock Lemley drove to the inside of O’Brien and streaked by him as O’Brien jumped the cushion, loosing multiple spots in the process. Lemley came through to take his first win of the season, with Derek Holmwood second and Kinney taking third.

Andrew Smith and Jaydon Huppert had a great battle in the front of the field for the 600 Restricted win. Going nose to tail lap after lap, Huppert snuck underneath Smith with the race winning pass on lap 12 on the bottom of turn two, Huppert turned away a huge move from Jett Barnes on the final lap to secure the win, his first at Deming Speedway ahead of Barnes and Colton Key.

Perfect nights of racing are rare at Clay Cup, but Brooklyn Constance did just that in the JR Sprint class. After setting quick time and winning her heat race, Constance completed the clean sweep, inheriting the lead on lap eight when leader McKenna Morgan had an unfortunate incident with a yuke tire and driving away for her fifth win of the year. The perfect night ensures her the pole for tomorrow night’s main event. Vito Cancilla was second and Braeden Wager charged from 14th to finish third.
