Clay Cup Prelude Wins to Mackey, Gundersen, Hillier and Morgan

7/8/22

Everson, WA – The final tune up before next week’s Clay Cup Nationals at Deming Speedway is in the books, with all four classes getting valuable laps in before the richest Micro Sprint race on the west coast. Colin Mackey, Jared Gundersen, Levi Hiller and McKenna Morgan won the Clay Cup Prelude main events.

In the Speedmart 600 Open division, Mackey led the final three laps of the feature in taking his second win of 2022. Breaking a string of bad luck, Mackey used a massive slide job on race leader Jayden Whitney in traffic to grab the lead and the eventual victory, with Whitney taking second behind him and Dalton Parreira running third. The four heat race wins went to KJ Snow, Jake Hagopian, Jake Trueman and Jesse Schlotfeldt.

Jared Gundersen gathered much needed momentum and confidence in the Shots 2 Go Espresso 1200 class in picking up his first win of 2022. Gundersen took over the lead on lap 18 after a fierce battle amongst slower cars saw race leader Brock Lemley collide with a slower car, ending his night. Gundersen, who had been fighting hard with Derek Holmwood and closing on Brock in that same traffic, assumed the top spot and scored the win ahead of Holmwood and Terry Lewis. Heat winners were Gundersen, Dakota Drake and Tyson Lemley.

Levi Hillier raced to his 11th overall victory of the year in the Mytrafficman.NET 600 Restricted class. Hillier had been chasing Adrianna DeMartini in traffic when Adrianna collided with a slower car and stopped, sending her to the rear of the field on lap 16. Hillier took over the lead and was untouchable in picking up the win, with Corbin Ramsey and David Greene rounding out the podium. Hillier made it a clean sweep of the night, setting quick time and winning his heat race. Other heat winners were Ramsey, Diane Knutzen and Mallory Fisher.

The final main event for the Clean Crawls JR Sprints went to McKenna Morgan, who led the from lap 8 to 20 in taking the main event win. In a familiar theme to the night, race leader Cooper Anderson encountered trouble with slower traffic that knocked him out of the top spot, and it was Morgan holding off a hard charging Colton Knapp and Chase Whitney for the victory. Sawyer Baxter and Kinley ASkvig won the heat races.
