Chance Crum Pulls the 2020 Double, Wins Clay Cup in 600 & 1200

7/18/20

Everson, WA – In a monumental feat of racing, Chance Crum of Snohomish, WA became just the second driver in Deming Speedway history to win the Clay Cup Nationals in two divisions on the same night, joining Liam Ryan who did it in 2015. Dominic Carter and Kane Van Sickle were also crowned Clay Cup champions on the night.

It was Van Sickle winning the first A Main of the night and collecting his first career Clay Cup championship in the Clean Crawls Junior Sprints. From the front row, Van Sickle would lead every lap of the main event, ahead of second place Drake Hadlock and third place running Lucas Mauldin, who had an entertaining battle for the runner up spot, swapping it between them a number of times before Hadlock prevailed. Ty Lovenburg advanced 8 spots to earn hard charger. The win paid Van Sickle $700.

Up next was the Mytrafficman.NET 600 Restricted Main Event. Dominic Carter set off from the pole and while Jayden Whitney kept him from getting too far out, never could close up enough on him to challenge as Carter led every lap of the main and collected $3,500 for his efforts. Whitney briefly lost second to Dalton Parreira before Dalton crashed out, but was otherwise stout all weekend in taking the runner-up spot. Levi Hillier finished third in his first Clay Cup in the restricted division. Caleb Grantham earned hard charger honors, advancing 8 spots.

The Shots 2 Go Espresso 1200 Main was third up, and in it, Crum would jet out to the early advantage, with Nate Vaughn and Derek Holmwood in tow. The early stages of the race featured multiple cautions and stoppages, but the top three stayed consistent, with Vaughn keeping Crum close early and often. A long green flag run finished the race off, as it went green from lap 11-40, and in it, Vaughn closed to a car length two times but could not quite find a line to pass Chance. Crum made a late race slidejob amongst slower traffic to gather some breathing room that proved to be enough to get the $3,000 win. Amongst that same traffic, Holmwood cleared Vaughn running low to grab the runner up spot, relegating Nate to third. Devon Borden passed 11 cars to win the hard charger.

10 minutes after the biggest win of his career, Crum set sail looking to double up, as the $10,000 win Speedmart 600 Open finale was next. Jared Peterson led lap one, but it was Peterson darting under Peterson to take the lead on lap two out of the second corner. What ensued from there was an exercise in patience and stamina for Crum, who committed to the high side of the speedway in trying to distance himself from the pack. Evan Margeson had moved up to the second spot on the bottom of the raceway and attempted to close on Crum, bringing Peterson, Jake Andreotti and Mitchell Moles with him. With a star studded field of cars on hand, Crum did not catch the slower traffic quickly, as the race stayed caution free. He entered the back of the field just beyond the halfway point of the main event but could not do much with them, as the track had two excellent grooves to race in, and drivers were locked in and in rhythm. Crum would clear Cody Gray up high around lap 26, while Andreotti passed Margeson to take second. From there, Chance continued to pound down the cushion, but couldn’t escape from Gray or Andreotti who tagged right in behind him. With Chance high, Andreotti had an opportunity to make a move if he could past Gray, but Gray was gaining speed, almost to the point of unlapping himself on multiple occasions. With three laps left to go, Moles snuck by Margeson and tried to pressure the front two, but Crum, exhausted as he was from two grueling races, kept rolling the top perfectly and Andreotti could not dispatch of Gray to try and make a move until the very last lap. Even then, Crum had added enough space to win his second feature of the night and write his name into the very exclusive club of drivers who got two in one evening. Andreotti held second from Moles, giving him a three year run at Clay Cup that saw him win in 2018 and finish runner up in 2019 and 2020. Hard charger was Caden Sarale who gained eight spots.
