4 New Champions Crowned at Clay Cup

7/15/23

Everson, WA – Four brand new champions were crowned at the 39th annual Clay Cup Nationals at Deming Speedway on Saturday night in front of a packed house.

The 40 lap finale for the 600 Open division saw slidejobs and moves aplenty all throughout the field. Levi Hillier took the top spot early with Caden Sarale hot on his heels. When the pair entered heavy lapped traffic right before the mid way point of the feature, Sarale found a clean line around the top of the speedway to overtake Levi on lap 17. Sarale tried scooting away from the field but a determined Colin Mackey found his way around Hillier and into the second spot right before a caution on lap 31. On the restart, Mackey made multiple attempts at sliding past Sarale, but Caden had the right counter move every time and would end up driving away for the $10,000 to prize. Mackey ended up second and Hillier took third. The John Heerspink hard charger award went to Jake Galusha, whose +11 in the A Main netted him an extra $1,500.

Seth Hespe won his first ever Clay Cup main event in the 1200 class. Derek Holmwood led the early portion of the race with Brock Lemley on his heels until the pair became mired in heavy slower traffic. While trying to work past a slower car, the pair made contact two times and the end result was Holmwood spinning and being relegated to the back of the pack. Lemley took over the top spot with Hespe heavy on his back bumper as the top group once again rolled through traffic. On lap 26, Lemley was caught up with two other cars colliding in turn three, ending his evening. Hespe skated past the wreck and took over the top spot, and from there, rolled away for the victory and $8,000 payday. Nate Vaughn finished second with Jacob Buckenmeyer taking third. Clennon Holloway was hard charger.

In the 600 Restricted class, the lead changed hands six times before it finally came to David Greene, who rolled into the lead for the final time on lap 27 and made his first Deming Speedway win count to the tune of $3,500. Lucas Mauldin and Dustin Ramsey rounded out the podium. Avery Touchette picked up 13 spots on his way to hard charger honors.

Briggs Davis dominated the main event for the Junior Sprints, leading all 25 laps with little challenge en route to victory lane. Kole Campbell ran a strong second, with Hudson Johnson taking third. James Hayashi was hard charger.
