August Begins With Wins for Mackey, Holmwood, Smith, Cannon and Coates

8/1/25

Everson, WA – Deming Speedway sprung back to life on Friday night with five classes of cars in action. Racing was sponsored by Bailey’s Tire Service and Capstone Plastering with 89 cars signed in for competition.

Colin Mackey flushed the ugly memories of July and started August with a win in the Speedmart 600 division. Chase Jensen led the first seventeen laps of the main event before Mackey snuck underneath him while battling in slower traffic. Mackey would lead the rest of the way to secure his eighth victory of 2025, with Jensen getting a career best second place finish and Reese Wickard running third.

Derek Holmwood broke a small winless drought on Friday night with a victory in the Shots 2 Go Espresso 1200 class. Nate Vaughn made things difficult on Holmwood, as he challenged him often and made a big slidejob attempt on the last lap, but a timely crossover by Derek secured him the victory having officially led every lap. Vaughn lost his nosewing late but still took second and Kyle Mitchell was third.

The NW Focus Midgets made another appearance at Deming Speedway on Friday night with Shane Smith leading all 25 laps of the main event for another feature win. Jeff Westergard tried running him down but couldn’t get close enough to make a move and had to settle for second. Alex Peck and Michael Volbrecht had an absolute war for third with Peck coming out on top.

The Doyle Guffie’s Rallye Auto Sales 600 Restricted main event came down to late race shenanigans. McKenna Morgan had led the first twenty four laps with Colton Knapp chasing her from lap 10 on. After taking the white flag, Morgan and Knapp made contact in the first corner that resulted in the cars being hooked together for the entire length of the back straightaway before Morgan came to a stop in turn three, breaking the pair loose and drawing the caution flag. Morgan would go to the tail of the field and Knapp was black flagged for rough driving, handing the lead to Ryan Cannon. Cannon would lead the final two laps for his first Deming Speedway win ahead of Jayce Medcalf and Madi Hoppe.

Late race traffic played a huge factor in the finish of the Capstone Plastering JR Sprints. Lucas Fisher held the top spot for the first 16 laps of the main before coming up on two slower cars racing side by side for position. Fisher chose to try the outside groove, which allowed Luke Coates to sneak to the low side and pass Fisher as well as both slow cars to take the lead on lap 17. Coates would clear the traffic jam and go on to the win, the first of his career followed by Fisher and third place finisher Lennen Peeters.
