Clay Cup Night One Winners: Key, Holloway, Knapp, Sargent

7/17/25

Everson, WA – 127 cars signed in to compete at the 42nd annual Clay Cup Nationals on Thursday night at Deming Speedway. All results below are unofficial as of the time of this writing. Points will be calculated and posted to the Deming Speedway Website and Facebook in the morning.

It was a Key family reunion at the front of the Speedmart 600 field, as Colton Key had early control of the main event with brother Cody chasing him. On lap 8, Cody shot around the outside in what ended up being the race winning pass to take the top spot and the eventual win. Colton ran him down in traffic but could never get back by, settling for second. Austin Torgerson was third. 55 cars were split into two flights of qualifying, with Torgerson setting quick time in flight 1 and Colin Mackey quick time in flight 2. The six heat races were won by Nicholas Howard, Levi Hillier, TJ Smith, Tanner Holm, Colton Key and Cole Frerichs.

Everything sequenced up perfectly for Clennon Holloway to take the Frosty Metcalf ride to victory lane in the Shots 2 Go Espresso 1200 class. Starting on the pole of the feature, Holloway led every lap of the feature comfortably, catching a yellow at the right time to keep him out of slower traffic through the whole 25 lap A Main. Holloway was followed to the checkered flag by Alex Lewis and Chance Crum. Derek Holmwood was fast time. Nate Vaughn and Kyle Mitchell won the heats.

A perfect scoring night is rare at Clay Cup, but Colton Knapp pulled it off on Thursday in the Doyle Guffie’s Rallye Auto Sales 600 restricted class. Knapp set quick time, won his heat race and marched from 14th to first to attain a perfect score and guarantee himself the high point for Saturday’s A Main. Madi Hoppe was second in the feature and Zack Hilder led the first 14 laps before Knapp got him and ended up in third. Chase Whitney was the fast qualifier in flight two. The other heat race wins went to Clayton Jalakas, Hudson Johnson and James Drury.

Kayson Sargent picked a wonderful night to win his first A Main at Deming Speedway, as he took the win in the Capstone Plastering JR Sprints on . Sargent started on the front row and passed Savanna Hillier on lap two to roll on to his first victory, Hillier and Lucas Fisher took second and third. Luke Coates was fast time, with heat race wins going to Fisher, Kole Campbell and Hillier.

Note – due to an officiating error, Hunter Cook will be awarded 10th place finishing points in the A Main with no position gained. All drivers from 10th on down will be scored as they finished in the main without deductions (i.e. two drivers will receive 10th place finish points).

127 cars signed in to compete on Clay Cup Night 1 with the checkered flag flying on the night at 11:11pm.
